Yankees $324 million ace provides grim update on elbow injury

The New York Yankees revealed some concerning news late Friday night as ace Gerrit Cole underwent testing on his throwing elbow.

The news, which came a day after he was shelled in a spring training outing against the Minnesota Twins, was just another item in a long list of injuries the Yankees are dealing with to begin the spring. Per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, Cole underwent “diagnostic tests with full results expected in a couple of days to determine his status for the start of the regular season.”

The 34-year-old met with reporters Saturday morning and while he said he’s hopeful, Cole also said he’s concerned about what the imaging will show on his throwing elbow.

“I’m concerned. I’m hoping for the best,” Cole said via The New York Post. “We have an initial idea.

“As I got home, it continued to get more and more sore. Something wasn’t right.”

Cole said that the lingering soreness after his start against the Twins was “alarming” and that “it was tough to sleep.”

Cole missed the majority of the first half of the 2024 season after he was experiencing pain in his throwing elbow. It wound up being a nerve issue that Cole was dealing with, and it cost him the first half of his season. With that said, he looked like his normal self during the second half.

In 12 starts after the All-Star break, Cole was 6-4 with a 2.76 ERA, 73 strikeouts, 20 walks and a 1.02 WHIP in 71.2 innings.

Cole began his ramp-up routine earlier than normal this offseason after dealing with the elbow issue last season, and it seemed to be working as he touted some impressive velocity during his early spring starts.

It’s never a good sign when a pitcher says he’s hopeful but concerned after getting a scan on his pitching elbow. There will be an update on Cole’s status soon, but the Yankees may need to prepare for the worst.
