Yankees $12 million star among MLB’s best free agent bargains

The New York Yankees had high hopes for Paul Goldschmidt, but it’s unlikely they imagined getting this level of production.

Though he only has five home runs on the season, the 37-year-old Goldschmidt has turned back the clock in a major way.

The former MVP has a .345 average with an .889 OPS and an incredible 15.9% strikeout rate.

Considering the Yankees signed him to a one-year deal worth $12.5 million this offseason, it led to Michael Monreal of Just Baseball naming Goldschmidt one of the best bargains from free agency.

“Having already surpassed his 2024 fWAR total, Goldy is showing that there’s definitely still some gas left in the tank, which is helping to make him one of the best signings of this past offseason,” Monreal wrote.

While the signing was met with some concerns after Goldschmidt was coming off a career-worst season, the veteran has quickly quelled any of that chatter with his hot start.

Combined with the emergence of left Ben Rice, who has 10 home runs and an .846 OPS, the Yankees have gotten some strong production from the first base position.

Whether Goldschmidt can keep up this pace remains to be seen, but the Yankees have to be elated with the production they’ve gotten from the former MVP.
