The New York Yankees’ starting rotation could use a boost. They could land an All-Star pitcher from a struggling NL West team at the trade deadline.
The Arizona Diamondbacks still have a chance to make a postseason push. However, injuries to Corbin Burnes and Corbin Carroll make their path significantly more difficult. If they fall out of contention before the July 31 trade deadline and become sellers, they have many players who are about to become free agents.
One of those players is All-Star pitcher Zac Gallen. Gallen is projected to earn a six-year, $116 million deal in free agency. The Diamondbacks may not want to pay him after giving Burnes a $210 million deal last offseason. ClutchPoints’ Zachary Howell proposed this trade that would bring Gallen to the Bronx:
- Yankees receive: Zac Gallen
- Diamondbacks receive: Chase Hampton
Hampton is the Yankees’ No. 7 overall prospect. Gallen would be a rental, unless the Yankees like what they see and keep him around with a new contract. Max Fried and Carlos Rodón have been great for the Yankees. However, Luis Gil is reportedly not slated to return until August. Ryan Yarbrough has been great since joining the rotation, but he is also on the injured list right now.

The Yankees are holding onto a small lead in the American League East, but the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays are in a position to take advantage of some injuries in the Yankees’ rotation.
Gallen has a 5.75 ERA this year in 17 starts. He has not looked like the ace he has been for the Diamondbacks in the past. However, a change of scenery and a spot as a middle rotation arm on the Yankees could be great for him. He has a 3.55 career ERA and has been a reliable starter over the years. He had a 3.20 ERA in 93 starts from 2022-2024.
