Xabi Alonso urges fans to ‘wait’ for decision on Real Madrid manager role

The ongoing season has not been a good one for Real Madrid despite having a star-studded squad with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior among others.

Los Blancos were eliminated from the Champions League semifinals recently, followed by their defeat in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. They also lost the Supercopa de Espana final to their Spanish archrivals back in January.

Now, claiming the La Liga title is Real Madrid’s only hope of winning some silverware this season, apart from the FIFA Club World Cup. These missed opportunities have put the Spanish giants on the receiving end of criticism.

Following the recent losses in the Champions League and Copa del Rey, uncertainties about Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Santiago Bernabeu. The Italian manager’s current contract is valid until the summer of 2026.

Now, amid these uncertainties, current Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer. The Spaniard, who has spent five years at Santiago Bernabeu during his playing career, has been rumored to potentially take charge of Los Blancos in the past as well.

Following the reports of Alonso’s potential move to Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro revealed (comments via ESPN) that the German club has a “gentleman’s agreement” with him, hinting that they are open to an exit for the Spanish manager.

“In a few weeks, we’ll know if there’s a coaching change at our clubs, but the fact is that we’re a very professional club and we have to be prepared for anything,” he said.

“We have a gentleman’s agreement, and if a team he’s played for comes along, we can sit down,” added Carro.

Now, Alonso has once again answered questions from the press about his future.

Alonso has been candid with his answers regarding his future, asking everyone to ‘wait’ for what his future holds. When recently asked again by reporters, he mentioned (comments via @bayer04Xtra on X) that he has ‘nothing new to say.’

“I have nothing new to say [on my future], the answer is the same: we need to wait. The communication with the club, Simon [Rolfes] and Fernando [Carro] is always good. There’s clarity between everyone,” said Alonso.

Alonso’s current contract with Bayer Leverkusen is valid until the summer of 2026. It remains to be seen if he decides to continue at the Bundesliga club or return to Santiago Bernabeu as a manager.
