Xabi Alonso is wasting no time at Real Madrid. Just days after taking charge, the new boss is close to sealing his first signing.
And it could be a very familiar face returning home.
Real Madrid have reportedly opened talks with Benfica over the transfer of Alvaro Carreras. The Spanish left-back has apparently already agreed to personal terms with the club, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
That means the only thing left to sort is the transfer fee — and talks are moving fast.
Carreras may not be a household name yet, but his story has all the makings of a classic comeback. He was part of Real Madrid’s academy as a teenager but left in 2020 to join Manchester United.
After bouncing around on loan, he found his footing at Benfica, where he’s impressed with both his attacking play and defensive work.

Why Real Madrid wants Alvaro Carreras
Carreras played 50 games this season for Benfica, scoring 4 goals and adding 5 assists. That’s not bad for a defender — and it’s part of what caught Real’s attention.
He’s known for his pace, his ability to get forward, and his calm head in big games. He’s even been used at center back, showing the kind of versatility Alonso wants in his squad.
“Carreras has already agreed to personal terms with Real Madrid,” Romano reported. “Talks are ongoing to finalize the fee.”

The expected price? Around €50 million. That’s a big step up from the €6 million Benfica paid just last summer.
But Real see Carreras as worth the investment, especially given his past ties with the club and his strong showing in the Champions League.
If the deal goes through, Carreras will become the first signing under Xabi Alonso. From La FAbrica to Manchester and back to Madrid — it seems the prodigal full-back is ready to wear white again.
