Writer offers brave Zion Williamson prediction as Pelicans trade rumors hit fever pitch

Yet another entry was recently added to the miles-long list of Zion Williamson injuries.

ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed Tuesday afternoon that the New Orleans Pelicans star had suffered an adductor injury, shelving the former No. 1 overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft for at least three weeks.

With the 2-time All-Star set to miss extended time, new reports from ClutchPoints’ Chris Dodson and Brett Siegel indicated that the Pelicans could accept the ‘first decent, reasonable offer’ sent their way to put a close to his tenure with the franchise.

If Williamson were to be shipped in the coming weeks to a new team, it would work to the benefit of CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn, who recently shared a somewhat hopeful prediction regarding the topic of the 25-year-old star’s NBA future.

“I think there’s going to be a time when Zion Williamson is playing 20-25 minutes a game for a great team that really knows how to maximize him,” Quinn shared via X/Twitter on Tuesday.

“Everything until then just continues to be a bummer.”

Actions are louder than words in these kinds of situations, but it’s certainly not impossible for the uber-athletic forward to revitalize his career while taking on a different role for a winning squad.

If a franchise allowed for Williamson to avoid over-exerting himself for large chunks of games and simply act as a connective piece, a path forward could become clearer.

Aaron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets is one example of a player formerly in need of both a change of scenery and play-style, leading him to hone in on his three-point shooting ability and learning how to navigate the dunker spot more effectively while sharing the floor with a passing talent of Nikola Jokić’s caliber.

After Gordon tailored his skill-set to match the Nuggets’ schemes, he became an indescribably important member of a championship team in 2023.

Thanks to his natural physical gifts, Williamson could just be a consistent jump-shot away from having a similar impact, though the kind of leap in three-point shooting productivity that Gordon experienced is incredibly rare (44.4% three-point percentage on 4.8 attempts in 2025-26).

However, these goals remain incredibly lofty due to his inability to stay healthy.

In 10 appearances for the Pelicans this season before his latest injury setback, Williamson had averaged 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists while knocking down 51.0% of his attempts from the field.
