Wojciech Szczesny’s surprise return to top-level football has been one of the season’s standout stories.
The former Juventus goalkeeper came out of retirement last year to help Barcelona during Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury.
Now, even with a new contract offer on the table, the Polish shot-stopper is taking his time — and he’s explained why.
After a strong run as Barcelona’s first-choice keeper, Szczesny was offered a two-year extension. But he isn’t rushing into a decision.
“I have received a two-year contract extension offer from the club,” Szczesny told Canal Plus. “But I need to decide with my family what’s best for us.”
For a man used to quick reactions on the pitch, this decision is taking a bit longer.

When could Wojciech Szczesny make a decision on signing new Barcelona contract
Szczesny, 35, didn’t plan to return to football. He was enjoying retirement — until Barca called last October.
Since joining, he’s made over two dozen appearances, helped win the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup, and now has a league title in sight. Not bad for someone who was supposed to be golfing.
But even trophies can’t guarantee a contract signature.
“I’ll decide in the coming weeks,” he added. “There are also the logistical aspects of school, moving, and so on. For now, I’m enjoying what’s happened and not thinking about whether I’m going to stay here or not.”
He also admitted that most decisions at home come from his wife:
“Most of the decisions regarding my home are made by my wife, and I’m not ashamed of that at all.”
Szczesny says his plan was always to spend a year in Spain, chase a dream, and hang up his gloves for good. Now, he’s stuck between La Liga glory and family priorities.
Barca fans may hope for a Szczesny save on this one — but it’s his family that holds the final whistle.
