William Byron inks long-term NASCAR extension with Rick Hendrick

William Byron will continue to pilot the legendary Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 in the NASCAR Cup Series deep into the future.

The 27-year-old has inked a four-year extension with the Chevrolet flagship organization that will see him continue to drive the car made famous by Jeff Gordon through the 2029 season. Having began his career at the highest level in 2018, Byron has since won 14 races, including the past two Daytona 500s.

Of those 14 victories, 13 have come paired with crew chief Rudy Fugle, who joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2021 and seeking to rekindle the success they had together in the Truck Series with Kyle Busch Motorsports.

“We’ve built something special with the No. 24 team,” said Byron in a team press release. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue working with amazing people at Hendrick Motorsports who believe in me, especially Mr. and Mrs. Hendrick. We’ve accomplished some great things that we’re really proud of, but we have even bigger goals ahead. I’m excited to go after them with this team and this organization.”

Byron has made the 16 driver playoff every season since 2019 and has reached the final four the past two seasons. He is currently second in the championship standings and already in the playoffs thanks to his second win in The Great American Race.

Team owner Rick Hendrick has always held a fondness for Byron. The driver is the son of a prominent wealth manager and their circles have crossed since his youth.

“William is the real deal,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, in the release. “What makes him so special is that he combines natural ability with an unrivaled work ethic. You see it in the great ones – the drivers who could get by on talent alone but choose to outwork everyone anyway. That’s William. On top of it all, he’s a person of high character and embraces his role as a leader. We’re proud to have him in our lineup and look forward to many more wins together.”

Now Hendrick Motorsports has all four drivers signed through at least next season with Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman holding contract through next season. Chase Elliott is signed through 2027 and Byron through 2029.
