Will Patrick Mahomes play against Houston Texans on Saturday?

While the Kansas City Chiefs won comfortably against the Cleveland Browns last week, fans were treated to a scary moment late in the game.

Two-time MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes II took a hit in the fourth quarter and limped off the field. It was revealed that Mahomes suffered an ankle injury with no structural damage.

Will he be ready to play against the Houston Texans on Saturday?

The good news for Mahomes and Chiefs fans is that the quarterback was a full participant in practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Mahomes is still listed on the injury report, but it’s a positive sign that he practiced in full early in the week.

If somehow Mahomes’ ankle takes a turn for the worst, Carson Wentz is Kansas City’s backup. This would obviously be beneficial for the Texans.

Wentz has played in just four games over the last two seasons with the Chiefs this year and Rams in 2023. In his last year as a starter — 2022 with the Washington Commanders — Wentz threw 11 touchdowns and nine picks in eight games, losing his starting job.

Houston is fourth in the NFL in total defense, allowing 302.4 total yards per game. The Texans are also stout in the secondary, allowing just 196.9 passing yards per contest, which is sixth-best in the league.

Houston’s defense will already be a challenge for Mahomes if he’s able to play. It will be an even tougher test for the Chiefs if they have to start Wentz.

Saturday’s game begins at 1 p.m. ET.
