The San Francisco 49ers have already been ravaged by injuries this season and we’re only five games into the 2025 campaign.
The Niners have had more injuries on the offensive side of the ball, but the biggest blow to the team thus far has been the injury to star edge rusher Nick Bosa.
Bosa went down with a significant knee injury in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals, which led to his early exit from the contest.
It was immediately clear that Bosa was dealing with something serious after he gave fans a thumbs down as he was exiting the field.
Bosa is set to miss a lot of time, but is there a chance he returns this season? Here’s what we know.
Will Nick Bosa play again in 2025?
Sadly, we have seen the last of Nick Bosa for this season.
According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, Bosa suffered a torn ACL that will end his 2025 campaign after three games.
“He was pretty confident that he did it. You could tell walking on the field, seeing his face and could tell talking to him last night just how sure he was of it and knowing his body, and then an MRI confirmed it this morning,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said while confirming Bosa’s injury.
If there is any good news for Bosa, it’s that he didn’t damage any of the other ligaments in his knee, so he should be ready to go by the 2026 season.
The bad news is the Niners will be missing their best pass-rusher and defender. The Niners have decent depth and will need more out of Bryce Huff, but nobody on the roster is capable of filling Bosa’s shoes.
With the trade deadline one month away, San Francisco has time to gauge how aggressive they need to be in terms of adding an edge rusher.
If the Niners look like true Super Bowl contenders but are lacking in the pass-rush, general manager John Lynch will probably go all out for an edge rusher.
But if there is any semblance of doubt about the Niners’ ability to compete for big things this season, the best the team will do is make a small move.
