Will Lionel Messi stay at Inter Miami until 2026? Alexis Mac Allister reveals key insight

Lionel Messi’s future at Inter Miami could extend beyond his current deal, with Alexis Mac Allister suggesting that the Argentine superstar is happy in MLS and might stick around for the 2026 World Cup.

The 36-year-old, fresh off his eighth Ballon d’Or win, has already achieved incredible success in the United States since joining Inter Miami in 2023.

With a Leagues Cup title, a Supporters’ Shield win, and MVP honors for 2024 under his belt, Messi continues to dominate. He’s now eyeing an MLS Cup victory to add to his growing list of accomplishments in Florida.

Messi’s contract, which runs until the summer of 2025, includes an option to extend for another year.

If activated, this extension could see him playing for Inter Miami during the World Cup, which is set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

What Mac Allister said about Lionel Messi’s future

Speaking to AS, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister shared his hopes of seeing Messi lead Argentina in another World Cup. “I think so,” Mac Allister said when asked if Messi might continue playing through 2026.

“There’s only a year-and-a-half left until the World Cup, and he looks happy. I don’t know what his future holds, but it seems like he’ll stay with Inter Miami to keep playing and enjoying himself.”

Mac Allister, who celebrated Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph alongside Messi, described the legendary forward’s influence. “Leo is everything,” he said.

“For my generation and for those who’ve shared a locker room with him, he’s everything. On and off the pitch, he proves why he’s the best of all time. It’s an honor to have played with him.”

With 191 international caps and 112 goals for Argentina, Messi remains the heart of the Albiceleste. As captain, his leadership was instrumental in securing the World Cup trophy in 2022.
