A nightmarish season for Joel Embiid and the 76ers has gone from bad to worse.
With limited options to treat ongoing issues with his left knee, Embiid has been shut down for the rest of the 2024-25 campaign. After winning MVP of the 2022-23 season, Embiid has been snakebitten by injuries for two full seasons, something he has admitted to taking a mental toll.
Embiid, the No. 3 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, has nine seasons of NBA service and will turn 31 in March. Historically, there are various examples of big men who were forced into early retirement due to recurring injuries, most notably former No. 1 overall picks Brad Daugherty and Yao Ming, who retired at 28 and 30 years old, respectively.
Conversely, former No. 1 overall pick Bill Walton saw injuries force him to miss three full seasons during the prime of his career, but he redefined himself as a player and played his final game at 34.
Technological and medical advances have changed treatment over the years but Embiid’s frustrating recent history and age make it fair to ponder what, if anything, is next. Here is where the idea of retirement falls in that space.

Will Joel Embiid retire?
Embiid has not indicated that he will retire after despite lingering knee injuries that likely will require surgery.
While it did not amount to anything, Embiid in 2017 admitted he “wanted to quit basketball” after missing his first two seasons with injury while also dealing with the devastation of personal loss.
He has taken a more introspective look at injuries in recent years.
Ahead of the 2024-25 season, Embiid explained that his recent meniscus injury put him in a bad place, saying “You’re on your way to accomplish a lot of good things, and then just like that someone falls on your knee. I don’t have any explanation for why it was so tough, but it just was … Mentally depressing, physically your body not responding the way it should.”
It is worth noting that Embiid recently signed a contract extension that keeps him in Philadelphia through at least the 2027-28 season.
