The Pittsburgh Steelers are over a week into training camp, and Will Howard continues to stand out.
With Aaron Rodgers sitting out of Saturday’s practice, Howard saw an increase in reps and took advantage of his opportunities.
One of the highlights of practice on Saturday was a long run by Howard, who received loud cheers from the crowd after picking up a massive gain on the scramble.
“Will Howard keeps it on a read option – maybe a fake toss to the RB? – and scoots up the field for a big gain of 30+,” ESPN’s Brooke Pryor wrote on X.
“Crowd loves what it sees from the most-hyped sixth-round kick in franchise history (jk but maybe not).”
Howard also impressed through the air, tossing multiple touchdowns during team periods.
“Will Howard connects on back to back TDs in 7-on-7. Kenny Gainwell and Evan Huml get them,” Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com wrote on X.
“Howard dots it to Freiermuth on a corner route for about 25 yards. Good throw,” Farabaugh also added on X.
To finish practice, Howard threw a touchdown to Connor Heyward during red zone work. Mason Rudolph also ended the day with a touchdown of his own.
“Both Mason Rudolph and Will Howard get touchdowns to cap some practice-ending red zone work,” Pryor wrote on X. “Rudolph found Connor Heyward, while Howard hit Max Hurleman on third down. Hurleman made a nice contested catch over D’Shawn Jamison.”
If Howard continues to impress in camp and plays well in the preseason, there’s gonna be a real discussion on whether he should be No.2 quarterback over Rudolph.
The Ohio State product is exceeding expectations as a sixth-round pick so far, and all eyes will be on him next Saturday when the Steelers travel to EverBank Stadium to square off against the Jacksonville Jaguars to open the preseason.
