Wild Red Sox trade idea would send $315 million All-Star to Phillies

The Boston Red Sox have had a busy offseason, with their biggest addition being the signing of slugger Alex Bregman.

Bregman joined the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million contract with opt-outs. He has agreed to move to second base, but nothing is set in stone yet, and the possibility of him taking over third base isn’t sitting well with Rafael Devers.

If things get ugly, Boston may be forced to trade Devers. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed the idea of Boston sending him to the Philadelphia Phillies for Nick Castellanos, Alec Bohm and Aidan Miller.

“Castellanos is a frustrating hitter, but the Red Sox would stand to at least get good power out of him as a primary DH and occasional right fielder,” Rymer wrote.

“As for Bohm, the Red Sox could turn him into a super-utility type to use primarily against lefties. He has a .870 OPS against them for his career, compared to a .693 OPS vs. righties.”

Losing Devers would certainly hurt for the Red Sox, and acquiring Bohm would counteract the point of Bregman playing third base.

However, since he has agreed to shift to second, it shouldn’t be too big of an issue. Bohm and Castellanos would both get fresh starts with a contending team, while Devers would join Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber.

Devers hit .272/.354/.516 with 28 home runs, 83 RBI, a 3.7 WAR and an .871 OPS during the regular season. Going to Philadelphia would allow him to stay at third base as long as Bohm is part of the package going back to Boston.

We’ll see how things shake out in the next few weeks leading up to Opening Day.
