Why Tottenham star Cristian Romero has been hit with a six-month ban

Cristian Romero is known for his fearless tackles and rock-solid defense — but this time, he’s taken a wrong turn off the pitch.

The Tottenham and Argentina center-back has been handed a six-month driving ban after being caught speeding in his luxury Lamborghini Urus last December.

The 27-year-old was clocked doing 60 mph in a 50 mph zone on the North Circular Road in North London.

Sounds minor, right? But it wasn’t just a one-off. Romero already had several points on his license, and this latest offense pushed him into automatic ban territory.

The ruling came from Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court last week, held behind closed doors under the Single Justice Procedure.

Romero didn’t try to dodge the penalty either. He now faces a driving suspension until December 26, right in time to unwrap his license with the rest of his Christmas gifts.

On top of that, he was hit with a £1,000 fine, plus £100 in court costs and a £400 victim surcharge. Pricey trip for a few extra miles an hour.

While Spurs fans won’t lose sleep over their defender being off the road, the timing isn’t ideal. Romero is currently being chased by Atletico Madrid, who are reportedly ready to meet Tottenham’s €70 million price tag.

Whether he’s heading to Spain or staying in North London, he’ll be hailing cabs either way for the next few months.

What Cristian Romero said while pleading guilty?

In a simple yet direct statement, Romero took full responsibility. “I am guilty of this offense,” he told the court.

The Argentine gave his Spurs player liaison officer’s contact for the hearing and confirmed his license was issued in Italy.

A speed camera image confirmed the incident took place on December 11, with a notice sent to his home in Highgate. As for his footballing future, it’s still up in the air. But for now, at least on the roads, Romero is parked.
