Why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should target Cincinnati Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson over Pittsburgh Steelers’ T.J. Watt

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to bolster their pass rush in 2025, the spotlight naturally turns to high-impact edge defenders. While Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt has been in plenty of headline trade speculations, a smarter, more realistic target for Tampa Bay is Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

Hendrickson offers elite production without Watt’s massive price tag or trade complications. He posted back-to-back 17.5 sacks seasons and remains one of the NFL’s most consistent pressure generators.

At 30, he’s in his prime, plays with a relentless motor, and fits Todd Bowles’ defensive scheme seamlessly. His ability to win with power and speed would give the Bucs a much-needed anchor opposite pass rusher Haasan Reddick, whom they just signed this offseason in March.

On the other hand, pursuing Watt, while tempting, is impractical. Watt is not only more expensive in terms of cap hit but would require a blockbuster trade package, likely involving multiple first-round picks.

Tampa Bay is in a soft rebuild with an emerging offense led by Baker Mayfield and needs to retain draft capital to maintain roster flexibility. Trading for Watt could jeopardize that balance, especially given his recent injury history.

Hendrickson, by contrast, brings similar production at a lower cost, both financially and in trade compensation.

Reports suggest the Bengals may be open to moving him, especially with contract tensions rising and the need to invest in younger players.

The Bucs have shown they will make aggressive moves to stay competitive in the NFC South.

Targeting Hendrickson allows them to maximize value without overcommitting. It’s a calculated risk that could push them into serious playoff contention without mortgaging the boat, exactly the kind of move a smart front office makes.
