All offseason, the main storyline for the Atlanta Falcons revolved around Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. Cousins, the veteran, was replaced by Penix last season, and there was seemingly some tension between them. In a Netflix documentary, Cousins revealed that if he had known the Falcons were going to draft Penix, he wouldn’t have signed with the team.
“Certainly, if I had that information around free agency, it would’ve affected my decision. I had no reason to leave Minnesota, with how much we loved it there, if both teams were going to be drafting a quarterback high. But I’ve also learned in 12 years in this league that you’re not entitled to anything — it’s all about earning your spot and proving yourself,” Cousins said.
In Week 7, Penix was injured late in the game but was able to play through it. On Saturday morning, it was reported that he might not play due to the injury.
“Michael Penix Jr. recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday. Penix suffered the injury during last week’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers as the Falcons dropped to 3-3. Penix was limited in practice the past two days and listed Friday as questionable for Sunday’s game,” ESPN’s Marc Raimondi wrote.
Late Saturday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed that Penix will miss the contest.
“Falcons Kirk Cousins officially is starting Sunday in place of the injured Michael Penix, per sources. It will mark Cousins’ first start this season,” Schefter posted.
While it’s never ideal for a starting quarterback to be hurt, this situation comes at an opportune time. The Falcons welcome the Miami Dolphins, who may be one of the weakest teams in the NFL.
The Dolphins’ defense is severely depleted, and their offense struggles to move the ball consistently. This should be a manageable game for Cousins to make his first start of the season, as Miami isn’t likely to pose much of a threat on Sunday.
