Why Matt Petgrave won’t face charges over death of former NHL player Adam Johnson

In 2023, Matt Petgrave, a Canadian hockey player, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of Adam Johnson. According to British prosecutors, Johnson will not face charges.

During a match between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers on October 28, 2023, Johnson, 29, collided with Petgrave, 31, resulting in his neck being sliced. Fans were asked to quickly leave the stadium as medical staff tended to his injuries.

Following the incident, the Panthers released a statement claiming that the event was a “freak accident” and was “truly devastated” by his passing.

“The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” adding, “The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him.”

A few weeks later, Petgrave was arrested by the South Yorkshire Police in November 2023, and was released shortly after on bail. The following year, the Crown Prosecution Service took over the case file in May 2024 and ultimately decided that they would not bring criminal charges against the hockey player.

“Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offense and so there will not be a prosecution. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson,” Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn explained.

After the tragic passing of Johnson, many of his Panthers’ teammates rallied behind Petgrave including Victor Björkung. The hockey player had reportedly told a Swedish newspaper there “isn’t a chance that it’s deliberate.”
