Why did Seahawks sign Cooper Kupp? Seattle adds another slot-heavy WR

The Seattle Seahawks made a huge free agent splash on Friday, as the team signed former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kupp’s deal with Seattle is worth $45 million over three seasons.

Kupp was released by the Rams on Wednesday after spending the first eight years of his career with the franchise. The 31-year-old was the Most Valuable Player in Los Angeles’ Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021 and was one of the engines of Sean McVay’s innovative and influential offense.

Seattle signing Kupp is a fantastic addition to the offense and gives quarterback Sam Darnold another playmaker. But why did general manager John Schneider choose Kupp over the other wide receivers on the market? Let’s take a closer look.

Why did the Seahawks sign Cooper Kupp?

Seattle moved on from two of their best receivers in recent history this offseason, as the team released Tyler Lockett on Mar. 5 and traded DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Mar. 9.

Moving on from Lockett and Metcalf left Jaxon Smith-Njigba as the only viable receiving threat on the offense. But that has now changed, as Kupp joins the unit and will be looking to put together another productive season in 2025.

Kupp’s ties to Washington may have also created mutual interest between both sides. The 2021 first-team All-Pro selection was born and raised in Yakima, Washington, just two hours away from Seattle. Kupp also chose to attend college and play football at Eastern Washington University.

Coming home to finish his career and Seattle’s desperate need for a wide receiver made Cooper Kupp and the Seahawks an ideal pairing. Kupp and Smith-Njigba have similar playstyles and will likely be the team’s top two receivers in 2025, so we’ll see how offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak designs the passing attack around his two savvy receivers and Darnold.
