Why did Corey Conners withdraw from U.S. Open? How Canadian golfer was forced out of final round at Oakmont

Navigating Oakmont has proven to be a monumental challenge for just about every golfer at the U.S. Open. Navigating Oakmont while injured, then, seems like a bad idea.

Canadian golfer Corey Conners evidently felt the same way, as he withdrew from the U.S. Open due to injury before Sunday’s final round. Conners had been set to tee off with Ryan Fox at 10:20 a.m. ET, though his hopes of contending were distant.

The withdrawal marked a disappointing ending for Conners, who earned a ninth-place finish at the 2024 U.S. Open and a pair of top-20 finishes in majors to start 2025. The 33-year-old is still seeking his first major championship.

Here are the details on the injury that forced Conners out of the U.S. Open.

Why did Corey Conners withdraw from U.S. Open?

Conners withdrew before the final round of the U.S. Open due to a wrist injury.

Conners initially hurt his wrist while attempting a bunker shot during Thursday’s first round and aggravated the injury on another bunker shot Saturday. While Conners decided to continue the round after being evaluated, the injury appeared to affect him. He finished 5-over par on the back nine after shooting 3-under on the front nine, falling out of contention.

The initial injury occurred when Conners struck a cable for a TV camera in the bunker on Thursday, his caddy said Saturday.

Conners was set to be paired with Fox, who got off to a hot start on Sunday despite the change. Fox shot 3-under par over his first seven holes, putting himself in position to at least walk away with some more money. While Conners’ back nine on Saturday largely took him out of contention, he was in position to potentially contend before aggravating the injury.
