Cristiano Ronaldo was missing in action as Al Nassr faced Esteghlal in the AFC Champions League. Fans expected him to lead the attack, but he never made the trip to Tehran.
The match ended in a goalless draw, leaving many questioning why the Portuguese star was absent.
Speculation quickly spread. Some reports (via DPA news agency published by Daily Mail) suggested Al Nassr wanted the game moved to a neutral venue due to Ronaldo’s past issues in Tehran.
Others wondered if it was a tactical decision. However, Al Nassr boss Stefano Pioli has now revealed the real reason behind Ronaldo’s absence.

Al Nassr boss opens up on why Ronaldo was left out
Speaking to reporters after the match, Pioli addressed the situation. As reported by GOAL, he explained, “He had a physical problem, but I wouldn’t say it was 100% a big problem, but we preferred him not to be in the game.”
While Pioli did not go into further detail, his statement suggests that Ronaldo was not fully fit to play.
This is not the first time Ronaldo has missed a match in Iran. He was also absent when Al Nassr faced Persepolis earlier this season in another Champions League fixture.
His only previous appearance in Tehran came in 2023 when Al Nassr defeated Persepolis 2-0.

Al Nassr struggles without Ronaldo
Without their star forward, Al Nassr lacked firepower. The Saudi club created a few chances but could not find the net. The absence of Ronaldo, who has scored six goals in five Champions League Elite matches this season, was clearly felt.
Despite the draw, Al Nassr remains in a strong position in the competition. They will now shift their focus back to the Saudi Pro League, where they face Al Shabab on March 7.
With 47 points from 23 matches, they sit fourth in the table, hoping to close the gap on the leaders.
