Why Cayden Primeau is Maple Leafs’ starting goalie vs. Predators

The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying something different.

Off to a 1-2 start to the season, and in the second night of a back to back, the Maple Leafs will start a new goaltender Tuesday night against the Nashville Predators.

It’ll be Cayden Primeau making his Maple Leafs debut as Anthony Stolarz takes a seat on the bench after starting the first three games of the season.

Primeau was with the Carolina Hurricanes over the summer, but the Leafs claimed him off waivers exactly a week ago.

Last season, Primeau had just an .836 save percentage in 11 games with the Montreal Canadiens, but he did have a .927 save percentage in 26 AHL games.

Why is Cayden Primeau starting goalie for Maple Leafs?

Primeau is only on the Maple Leafs’ active roster because Joseph Woll is still away from the team.

Woll left last week for a personal matter.

Stolarz saw plenty of time for Toronto last season, so he was logical to give all the action in the early going.

But this is a logical spot for the Maple Leafs to give Primeau his first start. Stolarz gets to rest after a disappointing loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday afternoon.

Primeau hasn’t played at the NHL level in the regular season for anyone but the Canadiens, for whom he had 55 appearances.

Now, it’ll be a new Canadian club for Primeau as he starts Tuesday night for Toronto.
