Why are RB Leipzig eyeing Liverpool star as Xavi Simons replacement?

Liverpool have been one of the most active clubs this summer with multiple incomings but they also done great business with their player sales.

Apart from Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds have generated good money from their sales as they recently allowed Tyler Morton to move to Olympique Lyon.

Another name, who has been linked with a move out of Anfield is Harvey Elliott. The England U21 international is keen to secure more gametime and hence a move away from the Reds would be viable.

According reports via Fabrizio Romano, Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig are interested in the 22-year-old Englishman as they have identified him as a replacement for Xavi Simons.

The Dutch star is linked with a move to Chelsea and though the move is still far from completion, Leipzig have already started scouting his replacement and zeroed in on Elliott.

The 22-year-old has dropped in Arne Slot’s pecking order citing reasons that he doesn’t fit in the Dutchman’s system.

Also, with Liverpool signing players like Florian Wirtz in his position makes it evident that there are no guarantees of more gametime in the upcoming campaign.

Hence a move out of the Anfield is better for the youngster, who recent finished as the Player of the Tournament in the U21 Euros where he guided England U21 to the trophy.

Why are RB Leipzig interested in Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott?

Elliott has been one of the most highly rated stars to come out of the Liverpool academy and he made great impact in a fringe role for the Reds over the years.

However, last season saw him get sidelined for a major chunk but even when he was fit, he was surplus to requirements in Slot’s philosophy.

He featured in 28 matches last season for Liverpool across competitions and surprisingly started in only six of them. Elliott still managed to score five goals and provided three assists.

The England U21 international has all the ingredients to replace Simons, who is linked with a move to Chelsea.

As per FBref, Elliott is better than Simons on several statistics per 90 starting from goal contributions (0.7 to 0.65), expected assists (0.45 – 0.5 to 0.26 – 0.3), progressive carries (8 to 3.5 – 4) and shot-creating actions (4.5 – 5 to 4).

While losing Simons will be a big blow for Leipzig but Elliott looks like the best bet to replacement the Dutch international.

The Englishman is extremely versatile and has proven his mettle in the Premier League and also in European competitions where the intensity of play is much higher than the Bundesliga.

Also, Elliott earlier made it public that he will be looking for regular gametime in the 2025/26 season citing his ambitions to be a part of the England squad for next year’s World Cup.

“If I had it my way I would be here for the rest of my career, it’s as simple as that,” Elliott told Anfield Wrap. “I love everything about the club, but at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what’s best for me.”

“I have big ambitions. I want to get in the World Cup squad. I want to keep being successful as a player. It’s something I still need to review.

“I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation. We have many new players who have come in so whether it blocks the path for me I’m not sure. It’s something I need to have a look at and decide.”

Therefore, his move to Leipzig suits all the parties involved and now it remains to be seen if the Bundesliga outfit seamlessly align with Liverpool’s demands for the 22-year-old.

According to earlier reports, the youngster will be available for something in the region of £35-40m so it sits well for Leipzig, as they could apparently use Simons’ transfer funds to sign the Englishman.
