Liverpool has one of the top goalies in the world, Alisson Becker.
But on Wednesday in the League Cup, they’re giving a start to their usual third-choice goalkeeper.
It’ll be Freddie Woodman making his debut for Liverpool in the EFL Cup clash with Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is on the sideline, too, as Woodman plays instead.
Why isn’t Alisson playing?
Alisson is out of the side due to injury.
Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper has missed the four matches leading into Wednesday’s cup tie, meaning this is five consecutive absences for the star.
He injured his hamstring when Liverpool took on Galatasaray in the Champions League last month.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has said it is “going to take a little bit longer” before Alisson can potentially return to the team sheet.
In a recent social media post, Alisson shared two emojis: an hourglass and a muscle flexing. He must think he’s close.
After the League Cup matchup, Liverpool takes on Aston Villa on the weekend, Real Madrid in the midweek and Manchester City the following weekend before going on international break. Those are some big clashes that they’d love to have Alisson available for, but it remains to be seen whether he will be.
