Who is Scottie Scheffler’s caddie? Why Ted Scott isn’t on the bag for World No. 1 golfer at BMW Championship

Scottie Scheffler is getting used to the unknown during this year’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a wondrous time on the green thus far, picking up four Tour wins in a trophy-laden campaign. He’s hoping to round off his season with aplomb and land a second-straight Tour title in 2025.

For him to do so, he’ll need a little help from his friends. Scheffler’s usual partner-in-crime, Ted Scott, has been made unavailable in recent events, including this week’s BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Olney, Mary.

In his stead has emerged another veteran caddie, albeit one who typically works with another high-profile talent.

With that, here’s what you need to know about Scheffler’s caddie dilemma.

Who is Scottie Scheffler’s caddie?

Scheffler is typically accompanied by Scott on the links, a veteran caddie who has been at Scheffler’s side since late 2021. Prior to his tenure with Scheffler, Scott spent 15 years on Bubba Watson’s bag,

A former mini-tour talent, the Lafayette, Louisiana, native initially bonded with Scheffler over their shared Christian faith, having attended bible study alongside one another during the Zurich Classic in the past. That was enough to put Scott on Scheffler’s radar.

Scheffler’s decision to partner with Scott has proven an inspired choice thus far. Scheffler nabbed four wins — including the Masters — in Scott’s maiden season in 2022. In 2024, Scheffler conquered nine courses, including another Masters crown and an Olympic gold medal.

Scott planned on lending his services to Scheffler once more during the FedEx Cup Playoffs. But during the final round of last week’s St. Jude Championship, he returned home to Louisiana for a family emergency.  He has yet to return to the links since, prompting Scheffler to recruit another caddie for this week’s BMW Championship.

Scheffler landed on Michael Cromie, Chris Kirk’s usual apprentice. Kirk finished 51st in the FedEx Cup points standings after last week’s tourney. Only the top-50 finishers advanced to the BMW Championship.

“Mike’s a great guy,” Scheffler said, per ESPN. “He works really hard. He does a good job and we’re both learning a new golf course this week.”

It’s unclear when Scott could return to Scheffler’s bag. The Tour Championship kicks off from Atlanta next week. Scheffler is the favorite, having already qualified for the tournament after opening up a daunting advantage in the FecEx Cup Playoffs standings. The Tour Championship will use a traditional start rather than a starting strokes format, meaning Scheffler will start even-par like everyone else, not at 10-under, as he would have done under the old format.

“Ted’s where he needs to be right now,” Scheffler said. “I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be. I’ve been able to talk to him a few times. Family’s in good spirits. Everybody seems to be doing well.”

Why is Ted Scott not caddying Scottie Scheffler at BMW Championship?

Scott is dealing with a family emergency, per Scheffler. He jetted back to his home state of Louisiana ahead of the final round of last week’s St. Jude’s Championship in Memphis.

Brad Payne took over for Scheffler in Scott’s absence at TPC Southward as the World No. 1 carded a 3-under 67 in the final round. He fell one stroke short of a playoff, settling for a third-place finish in the tournament.
