Despite concerns over their financial abilities this summer, Manchester United have looked to improve the squad at an unrelenting pace.
Still yet to secure additional funds from a single departure, United have spent huge money on the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko to improve the attack. They still have yet to address the midfield or defence, but that appears to be in the works.
Online chatter linking United to a summer move for Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume has reached a point where transfer guru Fabrizio Romano addressed the topic in mid-August. Romano claimed he is not aware of any discussions between the clubs regarding Agoume — “yet” — but he seemed to indicate that could be coming down the road.
The Sporting News brings you an overview of what the 23-year-old midfielder would bring to Manchester United and why the Red Devils may be interested in his services.

Who is Lucien Agoume?
Born in Cameroon in February of 2002, Lucien Agoume moved to France early on to begin his football career in Europe.
At just 11, he joined Clemenceau Besancon in the fifth tier of French football before moving to Racing Besancon shortly after. He then made the move to second-tier side Sochaux at 12, making his professional debut in 2018 when he was just 16.
It was then he was noticed by Inter Milan, who scooped up the young midfielder the following year for €4.5 million. He would make just four career appearances for Inter, sent out on loan three separate times to Spezia, Brest, and Troyes before joining Sevilla in the summer of 2024.
Through all this time as a professional, he was also part of the French youth national teams setup, appearing at all levels from U-16 on up. He has even appeared for the U-21 side as recently as June of this year, playing a key role in their semifinal run at Euro 2025 despite being 23 years old at the time.
Why do Man United want Lucien Agoume?
Still just 23, Lucien Agoume is a strong ball-stopper in midfield, something Manchester United lack.
With Casemiro now 33 and Manuel Ugarte the only long-term option at defensive midfield, the Red Devils are looking for another young player for the position. Kobbie Mainoo has not taken to defensive responsibilities, instead developing into a pure ball progressor in possession.
Agoume has statistical comparisons to the likes of Moises Caicedo and Eduardo Camavinga, according to FBRef, with high performance in tackling, interceptions, and aerial duels. He can also dribble at a strong rate and pass the ball forward effectively, as well. His exceptional ball-winning via interceptions (in the 96th percentile amongst midfielders) indicates he can read the game very well and step into passing lanes to prevent opposition build-up.
Lucien Agoume stats, key figures for Sevilla, France
While not a prolific goal scorer, bagging just two in his senior professional career, both with Sevilla, Lucien Agoume has assisted goals on occasion.
He picked up three assists in his first year with Sevilla, and managed one with Troyes while on loan in Ligue 1.
He also scored three goals in five matches for the France U-18 side, and bagged one in a friendly against Mexico for the U-19 team.
