Who is J.J. Spaun? Meet golfer who made U.S. Open history with stellar first round at Oakmont

A new name for golf fans is looking to break through at the 2025 U.S. Open.

J.J. Spaun has the Thursday lead at Oakmont after shooting a 4-under 66 in the opening round. It was just the eighth bogey-free round in the history of the U.S. Open at the course.

Spaun has had a strong start to 2025 with six top-25 finishes in 16 events, including a playoff loss to Rory McIlroy in the Players Championship. He’s looking for his first PGA Tour win since the 2022 Valero Texas Open.

A win at Oakmont would also be Spaun’s first career major victory. He’ll have to conquer one of the most difficult courses in the world three more times to hoist the trophy.

Who is JJ Spaun?

Spaun is the current leader at the 2025 U.S. Open. Remarkably, he shot a bogey-free first round on Thursday, just the eighth such round in the tournament’s history at Oakmont. Spaun’s 4-under 66 also tied for the best first-round score in U.S. Open history at the course.

Spaun has put himself in a good position to contend heading into the weekend. He’s looking for his first victory of 2025 after finishing second at The Players Championship. A win at the U.S. Open would be Spaun’s first career major victory.

Spaun is from Los Angeles and attended San Dimas High School in San Dimas, California. He played collegiately at San Diego State, where he was named to an All-American team twice and was the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2012.
