The Rays and Red Sox are set to face off in the inaugural Dominican Republic Series this weekend in Santo Domingo.
The exhibition games are a part of the MLB World Tour, an initiative to spread MLB around the globe, featuring up to 40 games played in Asia, Mexico, Latin America, and Europe between 2023 and 2026.
There have been three prior exhibition series played in the Dominican Republic, most recently in 2020 between the Twins and Tigers. And yet, for a baseball-crazed nation rich in history with an indelible mark on the game, the country is still waiting to host its first regular season MLB game.
The exhibition series not only affords fans in the Dominican Republic the opportunity to attend MLB games, but it permits Dominican-born players to return home and play in front of friends and family, too.
