Second-ranked LSU will look to continue its strong start to the 2024 campaign when it heads to Houston to take on Rice Wednesday evening. 

The Tigers (7-1) bounced back from their first loss of the year — against Stony Brook on Friday night — with two more wins to close their weekend slate. At the plate, LSU broke out of a mild funk with an 18-run performance against the Seawolves that saw six different players record multi-hit games. 

Right-hander Luke Holman made his mark across the opening eight-game homestand. The Alabama transfer made two starts and threw 12.1 scoreless innings, notching 18 strikeouts and walking just one batter. Right-hander Thatcher Hurd — projected as LSU’s top starter — has a 9.00 ERA across his first two starts. 

Rice (3-4) suffered a season-opening sweep at the hands of Notre Dame, but has won three of four since. In that stretch, the Owls relied on strong pitching, including a complete game, 11-strikeout performance from southpaw J.D. McCracken. 

The two teams last faced off in the regional final of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, as LSU ended Rice’s season with a 5-0 victory. The Tigers would advance all the way to the championship series in the College World Series, only to lose to Florida.
