World No. 3 Coco Gauff continues her US Open journey when she faces unseeded Donna Vekic in the second round on Thursday.
It was far from a straightforward first-round bout for Gauff against Ajla Tomljanovic. After winning the first set, the 2023 US Open champion lost the second set when it seemed she was narrowing on a straight set win. However, the 21-year-old bounced back in front of her home crowd in the third set to win the game 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.
Similarly, Vekic had to tough it out to win her first-round clash against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Despite losing the first set, the Croatian bounced back to win the next two sets, claiming a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Having made it to the Round of 16 of last year’s tournament, Vekic will now look to surprise the reigning French Open champion in front of her home crowd, having already got the better of Gauff at last year’s Paris Olympics.
