The American is fresh off a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over defending champion Iga Swiatek, one of the best players on clay, in Thursday’s semifinal. Gauff also has a slim 5-4 lead in the head-to-head series against Sabalenka, who is chasing her third title in the Spanish capital.
The Madrid Open is first of the two WTA 1000 events on clay in the run up to the French Open.
