World No. 1 and local hero Jannik Sinner is hoping to win his first title on home soil as he faces off against Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles Italian Open 2025 final on Sunday.
Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 to renew his rivalry against Sinner, whom he dominated in 2024. The Spaniard has a 6-4 lead in head-to-head series against the Italian, winning in all three encounters last year, including a thrilling semifinal win at Roland Garros.
Meanwhile, Sinner recovered after an early setback to beat Tommy Paul 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. The win meant that the Italian extended his winning streak on the tour to 26 matches, with his last defeat coming against Alcaraz at Beijing in October last year.
While the two are tied 1-1 on clay courts, Alcaraz has had the edge over Sinner in recent meetings. However, could the latter’s winning run and hunger for a comeback, coupled with the backing of a passionate home crowd, give the Italian a slight advantage?
Alcaraz, who missed his home Masters 1000 event in Madrid due to injury, has bounced back impressively, with yet another finals run. The tournament in Rome is the last of the ATP 1000 events on clay before the French Open.
