The No. 21 seed, Shelton, earned his spot in the Australian Open quarterfinals after an unexpected twist in his fourth-round match. Gael Monfils, the 38-year-old crowd favorite who had made headlines by becoming the oldest ATP title winner in Auckland leading up to the tournament, was forced to bow out due to injury. It was an unfortunate ending to an inspiring run for the French veteran.
On the flip side, Sonego came out swinging in his last match. His first serve was practically untouchable in the second set, winning a flawless 100% and keeping Tien’s opportunities at bay. The American found himself in hot water, trailing 5-2 before calling for a medical timeout to address a thigh issue.
After returning, Sonego made quick work of closing out the set, but Tien wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. Against all odds, he broke early in the third set and clung to a sliver of hope.
