Where Jonathan Tah fits in the Bayern Munich squad as defender undergoes medical

Bayern Munich are reportedly close to officially announcing their first summer signing, Jonathan Tah, on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

As per reports via Sky Sports Germany, Tah had his medicals today at the facility and will soon be announced as a Bavarian. As per Florian Plettenberg a contract till 2029 may be handed to the 29-year-old.

The Germany international’s contract with Leverkusen ended this season and after 10 years with the club, he decided to move on. Apart from Bayern, Barcelona were also interested in the defender, but eventually he selected the Bundesliga champions.

Tah started his career at Hamburger SV before moving to Leverkusen in 2015. In between, he featured for Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan for a solitary season. Tah will be leaving Leverkusen after registering a whopping 402 appearances.

Bayern’s defence were a big concern for their struggle last season, especially in the Champions League. So they desperately needed a senior player to add steel to their backline.

Also, his arrival in Bavaria will push Kim Min-jae down the pecking order as the 29-year-old is tipped to start alongside Dayot Upamecano at the heart of the Bayern defence.

What does Tah bring to Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich system?

Tah brings a lot of experience and physicality to the Bayern backline. He was a key player for Leverkusen for a decade and played a huge role in Xabi Alonso’s historic domestic double last season, where they won the Bundesliga unbeaten.

As per Squawka, out of a possible 3,060 minutes this season in the Bundesliga, he has featured in 2,970 minutes for Leverkusen, the most in their team.

Tah’s ball-playing capability will be a huge asset to Kompany as he can initiate attacks. He has recorded 2,295 passes and despite being the fifth-highest in the league, he owns a 93% accuracy rate.

This was also his fourth successive league campaign where he didn’t commit a single error leading to a goal.

The 29-year-old is a leader and his composure at the back will help Bayern. His arrival may also allow Kompany to shift to a three-man backline.
