Where is Thriston Lawrence from? Hometown, age and more to know about South African roots

For the second time in a calendar year, Thriston Lawrence is starting strong at a major.

After flirting with a chance to win the British Open last summer, Lawrence began his second-ever U.S. Open well, shooting a 67 on the tough Oakmont course. Lawrence has been a mainstay on the DP World Tour in recent years, but he hasn’t been able to break through in majors.

With Oakmont playing tough, Lawrence’s strong start should give him a leg up entering the weekend against some higher-ranked players.

Where is Thriston Lawrence from?

Lawrence was born and currently resides in Mbombela, South Africa, a city four hours east of Johannesburg that is formerly known as Nelspruit. He is the son of Steven Lawrence, a PGA professional, who also served as his coach while he was growing up.

Lawrence first broke out on the Sunshine Tour, which is a men’s golf tour based in Southern and Eastern Africa. Since 2019, Lawrence has four wins on the Sunshine Tour, along with four wins on the DP World Tour.

How old is Thriston Lawrence?

Lawrence is 28 but has been playing professional golf since he was 17. The South African first turned professional in 2018, and he played his way into the Sunshine Tour by the time he turned 22.

Most recently, Lawrence has spent most of his time on the DP World Tour, as he’s won four different tournaments in Europe since 2021.

Has Thriston Lawrence won a major?

Lawrence has not yet won a major in eight career starts. So far in his career, Lawrence has struggled in majors, missing cuts in four of his appearances and failing to finish in the top 40 at another three.

Lawrence’s best major finish was at the 2024 British Open, where he finished in solo fourth place after leading the tournament for much of the first two rounds.
