Spaun is from Los Angeles.
He was born to a white American father and a half-Filipino, half-Mexican mother and raised in Los Angeles County. Spaun attended San Dimas High School in San Dimas, Calif.
As a pro, his residence is listed as Scottsdale, Ariz.

Where did J.J. Spaun go to college?
Spaun played golf collegiately at San Diego State University.
He was lightly recruited out of high school and elected to walk on to the Aztecs golf team. The decision paid off for all involved parties, as Spaun became a two-time All-American and was named the Mountain West Player of the Year as a senior in 2012.
Spaun turned pro after his final year of college.
