The Los Angeles Chargers have come flying out of the gate to begin the 2025 NFL season and sit at 3-0 following a last-second victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday. On top of that, all three of those victories have come against AFC West opponents.
There is a lot to be excited about in Jim Harbaugh’s second year as the team’s head coach, and a 3-0 start is something Chargers fans haven’t seen for quite some time. In fact, the last time it happened was all the way back in 2002.

That year, the Chargers, led by Drew Brees as their starting quarterback and Marty Schottenheimer as their head coach, actually got off to a 4-0 start with wins over the Bengals, Texans, Cardinals and Patriots. It was actually the Broncos who gave them their first defeat that year.
This year’s Chargers will be looking for a much stronger finish than the 2002 Chargers had. Despite the strong start, the 2002 Chargers lost their final four games and finished the season at 8-8, missing the playoffs.
The Chargers starting this year at 3-0 has led to a huge head start towards the rest of this season. The rest of the AFC West currently looks like this:
Denver Broncos: 1-2
Las Vegas Raiders: 1-2
Kansas City Chiefs: 0-2
That gives the Chargers a two-game lead over the rest of the teams in the division after just three weeks. That may not seem like much, but it’s going to be a steep hill for all of the other three teams to climb in order to get back on an even level with them.
