What Klay Thompson needs to do as a leader in his second season with Mavericks

If there’s anyone that has experience in winning NBA championships, it’s Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson.

He hasn’t gotten any in Dallas, but he’s only been in the Lone Star State for a year, and he won four titles in his 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, one-half of the iconic “Splash Brothers” with Stephen Curry.

And now, as Thompson reaches the latter portion of a surely Hall of Fame career, it’s now time to think about how he can help influence the next generation of the game’s stars, especially Cooper Flagg.

“Gotta Lead With My Voice”

On the “Showtime with Michael Cooper” podcast, the three-point specialist talked on the differences in his leadership in Dallas as opposed to how it was in The Bay.

“I gotta lead these guys with my voice,” Thompson said. “I never really did that back in Golden State, so now I have a different calling to use my championship knowledge and show these guys it’s a journey.”

Thompson played and started in 72 games in his first year in Dallas, averaging 14 points per game, and boasting a three-point percentage of 39.1.

Aside from his NBA All-Defensive Second Team naming in 2019, the Washington State alum’s defense has never been necessarily elite, but in terms of being an on-court veteran, especially one that specializes in the deep ball, the Mavericks couldn’t have landed a better mentor than the five-time All-Star.
