The 2025 Laver Cup takes place in San Francisco in September, where Team World will attempt to regain the title won by Team Europe in thrilling fashion last year.
Although it has only existed since 2017, the event has produced some memorable moments featuring some all-time greats of the men’s game. This year’s tournament should be no different.
Europe has enjoyed the better record down the years, but Team World has won two of the past three editions and only lost out by two points last time, so 2025 could be one of the most competitive Laver Cups we have seen.
The Sporting News looks at the history and all-time head to head.

What is the Laver Cup?
The Laver Cup is a tennis tournament that has been held annually since 2017, with the exception of 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament, which usually takes place at an indoor hard-court venue, pits two teams of six male players against one another: Team Europe, and Team World, which comprises players from anywhere outside Europe.
Compared to golf’s Ryder Cup, the Laver Cup is similar to the Davis Cup in that players compete as part of teams rather than for individual titles. Each team is led by a captain, who selects three picks for his team to join three others that qualify by virtue of their ATP singles rankings as of the Monday after the French Open in June that year.
Laver Cup format, scoring
Over the three-day tournament, nine singles matches and three doubles matches are played. Each match victory is worth one point on day one, two points on day two, and three points on day three. The first team to 13 points is the winner.
If the teams are tied at 12 points each by the end of day three, a tiebreaking decider is played.
Players receive participation fees and a share of a $250,000 prize pot should their team win, but the tournament does not count towards individuals’ points totals for the ATP Tour that season even though it is a sanctioned ATP event.
