What happened to Cody Bellinger? Yankees star out of lineup vs. Tigers with food poisoning

The Yankees offense is off to a hot start, but one hitter has been a little slower out of the gate.

Veteran Cody Bellinger was acquired in the offseason to help replace Juan Soto, but he has had a tough week staying on the field. Bellinger missed two of the Yankees’ three games against the Pirates over the weekend, and he is once again out of the lineup as New York faces the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon.

However, Bellinger will not be placed on the injured list, as the Yankees hope this latest issue will pass quickly. Here’s why Bellinger is out of the lineup Tuesday.

What happened to Cody Bellinger?

Bellinger is out of the lineup on Tuesday against the Tigers because of food poisoning. According to the Yankees, Bellinger has been throwing up after eating what the team believes to be bad chicken wings last night.

“He’s been throwing up all night,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, via The New York Daily News. “So, hopefully feeling a little bit better now. We’ll see if we can get him going, make him somehow available as the game goes.”

In Bellinger’s place, Trent Grisham will make the start in center field again, as the veteran outfielder remains one of the hottest hitters on the team.

Bellinger had previously been dealing with a stiff back, which kept him out of two games against the Pirates over the weekend. He returned to New York’s lineup on Sunday and played in the first game of the series against Detroit on Monday, but will have to sit out again on Tuesday afternoon.

This isn’t the first time that a major leaguer has dealt with food poisoning in the young season. Guardians’ starter Tanner Bibee was scratched on opening day with food poisoning of his own.
