What Danny Murphy said about Alexander Isak will sting Liverpool fans

Liverpool fans may need to brace themselves. Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy has offered his take on Alexander Isak, and it’s a reminder of the striker’s slow start on Merseyside.

The Swedish forward, who joined Liverpool for a British record fee this summer, is yet to score in the Premier League this season. His only goal so far came in the Carabao Cup against Championship side Southampton.

Murphy compared Isak’s situation to Newcastle’s new sensation Nick Woltemade, who has hit the ground running for the Magpies.

The German international has four goals in all competitions and made an instant impact at St James’ Park, joining an elite club alongside Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand by scoring in his first three home league games.

“There is nobody in Newcastle that’s talking about Isak anymore and that is credit to him,” Murphy told Match of the Day.

The ex-England star praised Woltemade for being calm, composed, and reliable, adding: “He has taken it all in his stride and he looks comfortable. I love his moustache, he has got style, I love his hair. But his passing accuracy is incredible for a front man and he had three big chances. When you play well and you are reliable and a goal threat, that is all you want.”

What Danny Murphy said on Liverpool’s new attacking trio

Liverpool spent more than £400 million this summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and more. Murphy said Wirtz reminded him of Philippe Coutinho, offering creativity and bravery while seeing the whole picture on the pitch early.

Ekitike impressed with confidence and versatility, scoring in the Community Shield and showing deft touches beyond his physical presence.

About Isak, Murphy said: “Isak is quite complete. He can run in behind, he can be a link player because his feet are so good, and he also scores the normal striker’s goals. Probably the reason that he shone so much last season was that he stayed fit, so he built up strength and confidence. When he first came to England, he was not as reliable in the link-up – he was much more reliable last season.”

For Liverpool fans, Murphy’s comments are a clear nudge. While Isak has potential, the Swedish striker has yet to match the immediate impact of Newcastle’s new hero, leaving Reds supporters hoping their record signing can soon fire on all cylinders.
