The 2025 Goodyear 400, the first of two events this season featuring the renowned “Lady in Black,” will kick off the NASCAR Cup Series this Sunday.
38 drivers will compete in this intense race over 293 laps on Darlington’s oddball, egg-shaped 1.366-mile circuit, which is both legendary and brutal. That will happen in late August, when the same asphalt delivers a postseason punch to start the playoff stretch.
Regarding qualifying, NASCAR’s brand-new, two-variable method, which was introduced for 2025, was used to create the grid. Nowadays, it’s a numbers game, with 70% of the weight going to a car’s most recent race result and 30% depending on where it stands in the owner rankings.
Then, to add some spice, they use that metric to invert the order. Drivers are only separated from their starting positions by one qualifying round.
