As racers prepare to compete in the Food City 500 at the storied Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee this weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series is heading into thunder country.
The 500 laps of white-knuckle racing at the small track, which is just over half a mile every lap, will amount to 266.5 miles of utter mayhem. Once more, tire management will be crucial since the concrete surface will be gnawing on rubber like a child with bubble gum.
Regarding that, last spring Denny Hamlin wrote the playbook. On his approach to the checkered flag, Hamlin maintained his composure, played the long game, and led 163 laps despite the tire compound eating away at his wheels like a termite banquet.
William Byron currently holds the keys to the top slot in the standings going into Bristol, with Christopher Bell completing the top three and Hamlin breathing down his neck in second.
