Western Conference contender named top landing spot for former Bucks star Damian Lillard

With the Milwaukee Bucks moving on from superstar point guard Damian Lillard this offseason, the nine-time All-Star is now searching for a new home as he recovers from a torn left Achilles tendon.

The past few months have been a rollercoaster for Lillard, who suffered the Achilles injury in Milwaukee’s first-round playoff loss to the Pacers. With the 34-year-old expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 campaign, the Bucks waived and stretched the remaining $113 million on his contract, creating cap space to sign Myles Turner to a lucrative four-year deal.

Lillard has been linked to several contending teams in free agency, and Jonathan Adams of BetUS believes the Houston Rockets are a viable landing spot in the veteran point guard’s pursuit of a championship.

“The Rockets are tied for second at +500 to win the Western Conference behind the defending champions in OKC,” Adams wrote. “Houston is fourth in the NBA championship odds at +850.”

Lillard would likely have to split playing time with Fred VanVleet, but he’d be joining a team clearly in a window of title contention. The Rockets have made it clear they are in win-now mode, acquiring Kevin Durant in a blockbuster seven-team trade this summer.

An aging superstar, Lillard faces a long road to get back on the court. While that may require accepting a significant pay cut, he’s already set to receive a sizable salary from the Bucks over the next five seasons.

Lillard could go from playing with one superstar in Giannis Antetokounmpo to another in Kevin Durant. The Bucks failed to advance past the first round during Lillard’s time in Milwaukee, but the Rockets boast greater depth and a real shot at winning an NBA championship.
