The Washington Nationals made history on Wednesday. The only problem was the history was for futility, as they allowed nine runs in the third inning. That put them behind 10-0, and they later went on to lose the game 11-2 to the New York Yankees.
The history was the most pitches thrown in a single inning since 2003. It was the second most since 2000. The Marlins tossed 91 back in June of 2003.
The Nationals threw 77 pitches that inning, the second-most by a team since at least 2000 in a frame

It was an inning to forget for Cade Cavalli, who ended the game retiring just seven batters, allowing eight hits, eight runs, with seven of them earned, and walking a batter. The lone bright spot was that four of his outs were strikeouts.
Things were not a ton better for Shinnosuke Ogasawara, who finished the inning and pitched the fourth, but allowed four hits and three runs of his own.
Yankees getting hot, Nationals continue struggles
The win for the Yankees was their fourth straight. New York swept the three-game series at home against Washington by scoring 26 runs in three games. Now the Yankees will head to Chicago and take on the White Sox for a four-game series over the weekend.

Washington has dropped five straight games and is now 53-79 on the season, last place in the National League East.
New York hit six home runs, with four of them coming in the third inning. After Trent Grisham got the party started in the first inning, with his 26th of the season, Aaron Judge hit his 41st, Cody Bellinger clubbed his 25th, Ryan McMahon hit No. 18, and Ben Rice added his 22nd.
In the bottom of the fourth, Austin Wells hit his 18th of the season as well.
