Warriors’ Steve Kerr makes surprising announcement about Jonathan Kuminga’s future

The Golden State Warriors postseason run came to an end in five games against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors took Game 1 of the series, but a hamstring injury to Stephen Curry in Game 2 caused him to miss the rest of the series, which ultimately proved to be too costly for Golden State.

Now, the Warriors have some questions to answer this offseason, and a big one is regarding the future of Jonathan Kuminga. The former first-round pick has had an up-and-down run with the Warriors, and he was even benched late in the year before Steve Kerr turned to him in the postseason once Jimmy Butler was injured.

Reports swirled that the Warriors will discuss sign-and-trade options for Kuminga, although Kerr mentioned some other options, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

“If JK comes back, we will for sure spend the early part of the season playing him with Jimmy, Draymond, Steph. That would be a no-brainer. We didn’t have that luxury this year…If JK comes back next year, we have to look at that.”

Kuminga missed a large chunk of time due to an injury, and once the Warriors acquired Butler, the lineup and roster construction looked much different.

As Kerr said, once Butler came to town, it was playoff mode the rest of the year, which caused Kuminga’s minutes to decline quickly since Golden State didn’t have an opportunity to ease him in.

Kerr said there are things Kuminga needs to improve on while also saying Golden State has to construct the roster in some ways this offseason, so there are a lot of moving parts in the Bay Area this summer.

But, keeping Kuminga in town seems like an option, at least from Kerr’s perspective.
