Warriors should consider trading for this long-time rival, $76 million DPOY winner

The Golden State Warriors need some help on the defensive end. While the “Splash Brothers” and raining three-pointers are probably what this dynasty will be remembered for, the Warriors always won championships with their defense. That’s why this potential Warriors trade target could be the perfect fit.

The Washington Wizards have too many players. Their roster is currently 18 players, and they need to cut it to 15 by the start of the 2025-26 season.

This could mean either buyouts or making players available in trades.

One player on the Wizards roster who’s worth pursuing is Marcus Smart.

The idea of a Warriors-Marcus Smart trade may have some Golden State fans screaming. Many Warriors fans know him as the guy who injured Stephen Curry with a reckless dive for a loose ball. That being said, he is the type of player the Warriors need.

Smart is a hard-nosed defender who can create offense on his own. While he hasn’t been all that healthy the last two seasons, he is ready to bounce back. He is also only 31 years old.

Getting a second DPOY-winner to help at the point of attack would be huge for the Warriors’ defense.

The problem with a Warriors-Marcus Smart trade is that Smart’s contract makes getting him difficult. They could maybe get him through a Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade. Either that or add other contracts together to make the money work. That would probably be too steep a price.

Instead, the Warriors should pray for a Marcus Smart buyout. If Smart finds himself a free agent and is willing to take a minimum contract to increase his value, the Warriors should be there to pounce.
