The Golden State Warriors are off to a lousy start to the 2024-25 campaign, which may cause the organization to look ahead to the offseason sooner than expected.
Shockingly, the franchise could trade their prized point guard and impeccable long-range shooter to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal.
“Is there a possibility that it’s the other way around,” Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor said last Friday.
“That it’s Steph ending up in LA, because the Lakers also have Austin Reaves, Anthony Davis, they just got Dorian Finney-Smith, they have a pretty good supporting cast.”
“The Warriors feel like a more depleted team, especially if some of their young guys walk, (Jonathan) Kuminga goes; maybe (Moses) Moody doesn’t develop anymore. They have these guys who are going to be in and out of the organization.”
“(Andrew) Wiggins isn’t there for long, he’s solid, (Dennis) Schröder’s not going to be there for long. Maybe it’s the other way around; with Steph ending up in LA, I could see that as well.”
“For what it’s worth, just to be clear to the listeners, before the deadline this year, Lebron is eligible to be traded; Stephen Curry is not eligible to be traded, so Steph can’t end up in LA before the end of this season.”
Curry has experienced more highs than lows with the Warriors.
The 6-foot-3 guard has won four championships, earned two MVP awards, and received 10 NBA All-Star invitations, to name a few.
While Curry averages 22.5 points on 45.2% field goal shooting and 42.0% three-point shooting this season, the Warriors boast a mediocre 18-17 record through 35 games.
Curry isn’t going anywhere this season, but if the Warriors’ struggles continue, the organization may start fresh in the summer by moving on from Curry after 16 remarkable seasons in the Bay.
In a massive free agency trade with the Lakers, it’s safe to say the Warriors would force Los Angeles to relinquish a mature rookie stud in Dalton Knecht to help perfectly set them up for the future.
If the Lakers craft a well-rounded trade package for Curry the Warriors can’t refuse, the 36-year-old superstar may join Los Angeles ahead of the 2025-26 season.
