Warriors free agent target to pair with Stephen Curry plans to take his time

The Golden State Warriors are looking to upgrade their roster around Stephen Curry. While they were expected to be in the market for a big man, they have sat by idly as several options have come off the board.

Furthermore, their need for center help grew on Monday as Kevon Looney agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Warriors have been linked to Al Horford, with reports suggesting that he is at the top of their list to receive the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception.

Despite the two sides being connected throughout the day, Marc Spears of ESPN revealed that the five-time All-Star is taking his time to make a decision.

“He’s taking his time,” ESPN’s Marc Spears stated Monday. “There’s three to four (interested) teams. I know that there’s been a lot of speculation about Golden State, but we’ll wait to see if that three-point shot gets to (the) Chase (Center). He’s taking his time and seeing what else is out there.”

The Boston Celtics have already lost several key members of this rotation this offseason — and Horford figures to be the next player on his way out. He averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.9 blocks in 27.7 minutes per game while shooting 42.3% from the field, 36.3% from three-point range and 89.5% from the free-throw line in 60 games — 42 of which he started.

It is unclear if the Warriors are looking for the 39-year-old big man to enter their starting rotation. Horford’s ability — and willingness — to play both as a starter and off the bench would provide Steve Kerr with flexibility, if Golden State is able to land him.
