The Golden State Warriors are considering all angles. They need to strengthen their roster, and landing another superstar might be their best path forward.
That’s why there have been countless Warriors trade rumors linking them to just about every big name on the market.
One star nobody ever expected to see in a Warriors jersey is actually someone they considered trading for.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne, the Warriors seriously explored a trade for LeBron James:
“The gigantic trade that had landed Doncic in Los Angeles had formed sudden new realities, one of which was James eventually becoming an expiring contract for the first time in his 23-year career. It was the strongest sign yet that the end of his Lakers tenure was near… A handful of teams — including the Golden State Warriors, who tried to trade for James in 2023-24 — considered again whether to make an offer, sources said.”
A Warriors-LeBron deal was on the table once, and it still could be. If James forces his way out of L.A., Golden State might be one of the top destinations on his list.
Whether the Warriors should trade for LeBron is a different question. If they’re on the hook for his current contract, it’s hard to see the value.
LeBron is going to get paid over $50 million this season as he turns 41 years old. The Warriors can’t afford a contract like that. They definitely can’t afford one for someone who is significantly older than their already too-old core.
So, if a Warriors-LeBron trade is even possible, it probably isn’t the best move for Golden State. If he is bought out and becomes a free agent, however, it could be a match made in basketball heaven.
